Palm OS® Software Q & A

What is the Palm Operating System?
The Palm OS® is the operating system certain PDA's utilize. It's similar to the operating system (Windows, Mac, etc.) on your computer. The Palm OS® is different from, and is a competitor of, the Windows® CE Operating System.

There are many software developers, both large companies and individuals, who create the thousands of applications that enhance the functionality of Palm OS® devices. Handango has the most comprehensive collection of this software (not to mention all the hardware and accessories to go with it) anywhere on the Internet. Click here to learn how to download software from our site. (This will go to the section titled: Downloading and Installing Software from Handango

Palm Software

What is the difference between freeware, shareware, shareware registration and commercial software listed on Handango?

Freeware is exactly that - free. You download it and that's all. It is something that a Palm OS® developer wants to get out into the handheld community and does not ask for any compensation in return.

Shareware is also free to download, but sometimes, a message will appear while you're using the application asking for a voluntary payment for the use of the software. You are not obligated to send payment (and no one will track you down for it), but many users feel it is a nice gesture to support the developers that are offering the product.

With Shareware Registration software, you have the option to "download a demo" for free or "add to basket" and purchase the full version. The demo will be a trial or demonstration version, which may be limited in features, compared to the full version or will actually expire within a given number of days if the full version is not bought. It will come with instructions on where to go to purchase the full version and "register" the software. If you choose to buy the full version, you will also be downloading the demo, but the registration code used to "unlock" the demo will automatically be e-mailed to the address you specify in the billing process within 24 hours.

Commercial software also gives you the option of downloading a demo (unless otherwise stated as being shippable) or purchasing the full version, but if you get the demo, that is all there is -- there will not be a registration code used to unlock it into the complete version. When you pay for the product, you will get the full version immediately.

What software comes standard with the Palm OS® Devices?

All Palm OS® devices come standard with four major software applications, the address book, date book, memo pad, and To-Do list. These "big four" applications provide enough functionality to make the unit extremely useful. The best thing about your Palm, though, is the thousands of applications you can add to it to make it even more functional from third-party developers. You can get all of these at Handango! Document readers, big clocks, expense trackers, sports schedules, games -- the type of applications available are basically unlimited!

What are some basic software applications I should get?

There are tons of great software applications to recommend to a new user, but determining which ones are the most appropriate for you depends on what you use your device for most often. Handango organizes its vast software catalog into categories such as Travel, Entertainment, Business, Personal Productivity, and Games to make it easier to find exactly what you're looking for. There is also a list of the top 50 Most Popular downloads so you can see what everyone else is downloading.

Downloading Software from Handango

The majority of the software available on Handango is downloadable. This means that the applications are downloaded from Handango to your desktop computer and saved in whatever file you specify. The applications are then transferred to your Palm OS® device when you perform the HotSync® operation. There are a few products that are considered boxed software, such as Tiger Woods Golf, that are not downloadable. When ordered, these programs will be shipped to the address you specify.

New users may experience some confusion downloading and installing new software applications on their Palm OS® device, but the steps below should make it a very simple process.

Step 1. Find the product listing or product description for the software you want to download on Handango's site. Click on the "Freeware" button if it is freeware or shareware registration software. If the product is commercial software, click on "add to basket" to purchase it and the downloading process will begin after you are done with the purchase.

Step 2. When the "File Download" box appears, choose the "Save this file to disk" option and click OK.

Step 3. When the "Save As" box appears, you have to choose where you want to save your download. We recommend you save it on your computer's desktop so it will be easy to find later. To do this, choose "Desktop" from the "Save in" pull down menu.

Step 4. Make a note of the file type in the "Save as type" box and click "Save".

Step 5. The installation will begin and a status box will appear. Click CLOSE in the "Download Complete" box. You have successfully transferred the software program from the Handango to your computer.

Installing Software Onto Your Palm OS® device
**Before you begin the installation process, it is important to make sure that you have already installed the Palm OS® Desktop Organizer Software that came with your Palm OS® device.

Step 6. If the file ends with '.pdb', '.prc' or '.exe', you can skip the decompression stage in Step 7 and go straight to Step 8.

Step 7. If the file ends with '.zip', you might need additional software to decompress the file. Double click on the icon that looks like a little yellow file cabinet that is now on your desktop. If the WinZip® dialog box appears, you already have WinZip® on your computer and can proceed to Step 8. If WinZip® does not automatically come up when double-clicking on the icon, you need to get it before you can decompress the file. WinZip® is widely used and is available for free at www.winzip.com. Follow these steps to install WinZip® and then go to Step 8.

    1. Download the free evaluation version.
    2. When the "File Download" box appears, select "Save this file to disk" and click OK.
    3. On the pull down menu in the "Save in" box, choose "Desktop" and click Save. WinZip® will appear on your desktop as a yellow icon that looks like a file cabinet.
    4. Start the installation of WinZip® by double clicking on the WinZip® icon on the desktop.
    5. Choose "Setup" and click OK.
    6. In the next few dialog boxes, select the WinZip® Classic version (instead of the Wizard), and choose Express setup.
    7. Once you finish this process, double clicking on any '.zip' files will now automatically bring up the WinZip® box.

Step 8. Double click on the icon of the program you downloaded onto your desktop. This will automatically launch WinZip®. Click the "I Agree" button to start the program. With the WinZip® box open, double click on all files with a .prc or .pdb extension.

Step 9. The "Install Tool" window will appear with those files selected. Click "Done" and a box will come up that says the program(s) will be installed the next time you perform the HotSync® operation between your handheld and your PC. Click OK.

Step 10. Place your Palm OS® device into the cradle and press the HotSync® button. The software is now successfully on your Palm OS® device.
