on Jul 12, 2004 - I have spent many hours (25+) playing Maui Mountain Biking by MauiGames and would like to comment on my evaluation. In general, and considering that the game I played was developed for a very limited mobile phone system (Nokia Series 40), I found the graphics and playability to be excellent. One of the most important characteristics of any game is the tension between differing strategies; in this area Maui Mountain Biking excels. The objective of the game is either to score the highest number of points, or to complete the course in the fastest time. In both instances, this objective is impacted by the decision of whether to race down the hill, or take advantage of the bonus points/time offered by using the trick ramps. In addition, if the player chooses the trick ramps, they have the further decision regarding the complexity of the trick sequence chosen. I suspect, when this game is released, that there will be many discussions between players as to what is the best strategy to use. This is highly positive; the greatest games lead to these types of discussions, disagreements and drives ?word of mouth? sales. In addition to these major issues, there were many finer issues that add significantly to the fun, challenge, and compelling nature of Maui Mountain Biking: 1) The POV (point-of-view) of the game is excellent. This is the ?over-the-shoulder? view that puts the player into the game much better than the traditional side-scrolling method. While this view is more complex to program, the desirability is obvious since you can see that many of the more popular side-scrolling games over the years become over-the-the shoulder products as they mature into the later versions. 2) The game-play feature that forces the player to concentrate on both steering and pedaling at the same time (whenever you change direction, the pedaling stops and must be restarted). It is this multiple focus that provides that extra challenge so necessary to keep players interested for many hours (perceived value). 3) The fact that players can coast for long distances. This is essential for the beginning player, a feature that allows them to learn one important skill at a time. In the beginning, they can focus on steering down the hill, once they?ve mastered this, they can begin to learn how to do it faster and faster. 4) The fact that other players? scores will be available on the web based ?leader board?. This enables the player to determine attainable goals and is another feature that will keep them coming back for more plays. Winning valuable prizes also add to the value. 5) The inclusion of three different levels of difficulty. Again, this creates greatly added perceived value, and will be a major reason that players choose MauiGames games whenever they find them available. Probably the greatest fun I had playing this game was trying to beat my previous score, determining the best strategy to score the highest number of points. This is an excellent motivation, the exact one we would want for a game such as this.
