Fireworks, no follow through

on Aug 8, 2004 - "This is one of the most difficult arcade games I've ever played in my life." This is something you may say when you first play Firepower: Onrush. It is a shooter game that lives up to a number of shooter predecessors including the infamous 1984. Although I found 1984 somewhat more interesting in some respects (more variety of weapons), Firepower had a feel to it that made you want to keep on playing. You control your plane by either using your stylus or the D-Pad. You toggle the shoot button, destroying any enemy in the line of sight and dropping bombs on ground enemy. Occasionally there are too many planes for you to handle, that is when you engage your cleavorly titled "super act" where you pretty much unleash hell. You have the choice of two aircraft. One is piloted by a guy and seems to be slow yet very powerful. The other is piloted by a girl that has a ranged attack. Apparently the girl's plane is easier then the guy's plane, but I found nothing easy about it. The first level itself starts off with about six enemy planes screaming towards you. For the first three times playing Firepower, I died on the first plane. The furthest I could get was the end of mission 2. This makes the replay value very low as you are pretty much stuck to see only the first two levels of the game. But the graphics, sounds and oh so annoying rock music make up for the difficult gameplay. I didn't believe the detail of the graphics when I saw how great they were. I thought there would've been choppy framerates and bad animations, but no. It looks amazing. The animated menus, flying planes and countless explosions had me hooked. Firepower is a great shooter game which lives up to the standards of its predecessors. Although it can be extremely frutrating at times, the amazing graphics, control system and difficulty will have you highly entertained for about an hour.

Great Graphics, less than stellar controls

on Feb 11, 2004 - I think this could have been a great shoot-em-up, if the developers had used a different control scheme. As it stands, it is a side scrolling shooter that has turned the screen so this places all controls on the left. You CAN use the stylus to control your ship and buttons to fire but it just feels wrong. They should hvae placed screen buttons on the right top and right bottom to fire your weapons and used the d-pad to control. Other than that , it's a fine looking game.
