on Oct 15, 2004 - If you don;t expect much from freebies, you're wrong on this one. Very stable with good graphics and good engine. I'm not a very good chess player (I don't know my ELO) but so far I cannot beat the game on level 4 and higher. If you are looking for a chess game, get this one and spend your money on something else. This one is a winner.

on Jan 28, 2004 - This is a great app for your PPC, no doubt about that, but the chess engine is nothing to write home about. I have already beat the computer on my iPaq h1940 in 5 of the 6 playing levels in my first 2 days after downloaging this freebie. I'm working on level 6 - the top level. For comparison, my Yahoo chess rating is in the 1600's. Nevertheless, this is a pretty fun program, and I suggest you try it before wasting your money on pay software. Of course there is the option of playing an online chess engine, which should be stronger than the local PPC engine, but I wasn't successful in my attempts to connect to the online engine, nor to the MSN messenger feature to play against other people. Perhaps others can troubleshoot that problem, because there's nothing about it in the help section. All in all, it won't be of concern to you if you play leisurely, because unless you are a chess brainiac, the computer will whip your bottom most of the time. If after using this program you are still not satisfied (and I doubt it will be the case) - then, and only then should you consider dishing out some cash for other programs. The program takes up a relatively small amount of disk-space, which is a big plus in PPC's. It has pretty much all the features the pay software have, such as saving games as files, move hints, board setup, switch sides in midgame, and undo moves, and MSN compatibility to top it off.
