The WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment otherwise known as J9 is able to run true Java J2SE applications including AWT and SWT with proper graphical widgets and true JDBC database connectivity. This environment supports all the things lacking in J2ME so that true business applications can be built. In order to fully use the potential of J9 you will also need a rapid application development environment. This will save days of coding Java by hand. The best and simplest mobile development environment I have seen is MobiForms (also available on Handango) and fully compatible with J9.

If you can get past some of the Java-on-PocketPC gotchas (link file size limitation of 255 bytes, etc.) then you are in business. Combine this with Eclipse SWT for quick development & ease of release.
