PDA Defense Professional automatically and securely locks a Pocket PC-based device and provides an easy-to-use interface and flexible protection alternatives. PDA Defense Professional is the only comprehensive security product available for the Pocket PC that locks down potential security holes. It disables any data transfer mechanisms such as ActiveSync® and IrDa port, so that there is no way to retrieve information without a password. Your information is secure even if the device is reset.
PDA Defense Professional provides flexible encryption options to protect the user''''''''s databases. You can choose which databases to protect. This includes both standard Pocket PC application databases, such as Address and Calendar, as well as third-party application databases and individual folders. You can also choose from different encryption algorithms (Blowfish or fast).
You can also choose to either allow unlimited password attempts, or activate the "bomb." Once activated, the "bomb" will allow a limited number of attempts (between three and 10) to enter a password successfully. Once an unauthorized user reaches that limit trying to crack the owner''''''''s password, PDA Defense Professional will completely delete all of the PDA''''''''s data and applications, effectively preventing would-be information thieves access to any personal or classified information. All information, of course, can be easily retrieved by restoring a back-up or syncing the device to the owner''''''''s computer system.
PDA Defense Professional for the Pocket PC offers the following features:
- 128-bit encryption: 128-bit or 512-bit Blowfish encryption protects any information stored on a device.
- Bit-wiping "bomb": PDA Defense prevents "brute force" attacks by limiting the number of attempts to unlock the device. When the user exceeds the maximum number of attempts, PDA Defense''''''''s "Bomb" feature bit-wipes all RAM databases without a user prompt. Of course, the user can restore the data from his or her PC if the device is recovered or replaced with a new unit. On the Pocket PC version, any password information is also wiped.
- Time-sensitive bit-wiping "bomb": PDA Defense prevents unauthorized access to data if the PDA is lost or stolen by allowing the user to bit-wipe the data automatically if a device is not HotSynced within a specified time frame.
- Decryption-on-demand: Decryption-on-demand maximizes performance and response time by decrypting databases only when they are needed, instead of all at once.
- Hardware button password entry: Optional hardware button password entry -- instead of the on-screen keyboard or Graffiti -- dramatically speeds up password entry time. The PDA is protected even after a reset.
- Auto-lock: Time-delayed lock or lock upon shutoff.
- Soft-reset activation: PDA Defense will be activated even after a soft reset on a locked device, requiring the user to provide a password to gain access.
- Data transfer disabling: PDA Defense disables data transfer mechanisms, such as HotSync and IrDA, when the device is locked.
- MD5 hash password encryption: Rather than the password itself, only an encrypted form of the password is stored using an MD5 hash.
- Encryption key erasure: PDA Defense erases the encryption key after the device is locked. The encryption key will be generated when user enters the correct password, and there is no way to recover an encryption key from the stored password hash.
- Password masking: To enhance security, PDA Defense masks the password as it is entered on the System Lockout screen. Passwords entered cannot be seen on the screen because all symbols are replaced with an asterisk (*) as the password is entered.
- Card encryption support: Support for memory card encryption.
- Selective database encryption: If an application uses multiple databases, the user can choose to encrypt any or all databases used by that application. In the Enterprise version, the administrator chooses the databases to be encrypted.

on Apr 16, 2005 - Version 3.1d is fully compatible with Windows Media 2003 Second Edition. I just installed "PDA Defense Pro 3.1d" on my Axim X30 Pocket PC, and it works flawlessly. I believe that PDA Defense is currently the ONLY encryption package that can encrypt the internal databases in the PDA (which are used to store your tasks, appointments, calendar info, and contacts). PDA Defense can use a strong 256-bit AES encryption, and has more features than other similar encryption software such as Sentry 2020. Since PDA Defense provides enough mobile protection to be used by defense contractors and security firms then it's certainly good enough for an average user like me.

Not for WM 2003 OS, Second Edition

on Aug 27, 2004 - I gave it a 3 because I don't know how well it works. It is not compatible with WM 2003 Second Edition - the latest edition. After installation my Dell Axim X30 would not sync. And this program didn't work anyway. Had to hard reset and re-install everything. They say the problem will be solved in the next edition: version 3.1d. Hopefully so. In the meantime, if you have Second Edition don't try this at home or otherwise.
